Taiwan’s Top Badminton Player Graduates With Honors

Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Taiwan’s top badminton player Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) received her master’s degree with Taipei Mayor’s Award and Award for Outstanding Contribution to Non-Academic Fields bestowed Saturday.

Tai, 23, graduated from the Graduate Institute of Sports Training, University of Taipei. The university was merged from the Taipei Municipal University of Education and the Taipei Physical Education College in August 2013.

She was the only graduate of the university to be grantgranted with Award for Outstanding Contribution to Non-Academic Fields in 2018.

Tai’s outstanding performance in badminton has been recognized worldwide. She has been at the top of Badminton World Federation (BWF) women’s singles rankings for the second time since May 3, 2018.

She became world No. 1 in women’s singles in December 2016 for the first time and stayed at the top of BWF rankings for 67 consecutive weeks.

“She is truly a model for athletes,” said university president Tai Hsia-ling (戴遐齡), who herself is a retired athlete and a former head of the now defunct Sports Affairs Council under the Executive Yuan.

Tai has been admitted to the doctoral program of the Graduate Institute of Sports Training of her university.
